Welcome to Zapata County Appraisal District

 

Zapata County is located in close proximity to many major cities: San Antonio and Brownsville are both approximately 200 miles from Zapata. Corpus Christi lies 150 mile to the northeast and Monterrey, Mexico is the same distance to the southwest. The town of Zapata is located in south Texas in Zapata County in a rural setting. Zapata County was created and organized in 1858 from Starr and Webb Counties. The unincorporated county seat of Zapata is located 40 miles southeast of Laredo on U.S. Highway 83. The other small communities in the County of Zapata are San Ygnacio, Lopeno, Falcon, and Bustamante.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Zapata County as of the 2010 census is 14,018 residents which increased 15.1% from 2000. Leading industries included mineral production, ranching and tourism. Leading attractions in Zapata County include Falcon Lake, Zapata Museum, historical San Ygnacio, and bird sanctuary. The county has one independent school district.

The Zapata County Appraisal District was created by the 1979 Texas Legislature to consolidate property value appraisals into single (county) districts. The appraisal district became active in 1983 and is responsible for appraising property in the county for ad valorem tax purposes. The chief appraiser is the chief administrator of the appraisal office and is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the appraisal district board of directors.

Zapata County Appraisal District is responsible for appraising all real and business personal property within Zapata County. The district appraises property according to the Texas Property Tax Code and the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices (USPAP).
